There are several factors that influence the capacity to retain a coffee enema.
1 - Coffee Enema Temperature
2 - Pelvic Floor Muscle Fitness
3 - How Well Your Colon is Functioning

Too warm is not safe, and too cold is likely to activate your colon, causing it to contract and expel the liquid.
Temperature adjustment of your coffee enema takes a little time to learn. If you are a beginner, better to err on the slightly cooler side than risk having it too hot.
A good way to be safe is to immerse your pinky in the coffee and keep it there for 10 seconds. Remember that your finger is less delicate and less sensitive to heat than the mucus membrane lining your gut.
To best retain a coffee enema, it should feel comfortably warm with NO hint of 'hot,' that is best.

The muscles of your pelvic floor (pubococcygeal muscles) are a bit like a multi-layered hammock supporting the abdominal organs.

First and easiest way to feel those muscles is to experiment with stopping urine flow in mid-stream.
Once you know where the pubococcygeal muscles are and how to contract them, you can exercise them to improve tone. Try a slowly increasing contraction and tighten as far as you can, then SLOWLY release. Three times is a nice beginning session.
You can also try a staccato rhythm. Do maybe 10 repetitions at first and work up gradually to around 100.
After each round, take a full, deep breath and gently let the muscles totally relax and 'hang down.'
Over time, you will come to enjoy Kegel exercises. They can be done anywhere, any time - and no one will know you're doing them - unless you say so (I'm doing them right now as I sit writing this).
Especially if you are doing 'caffeine dialysis' for the first time, you may want to make it easier with some preparatory colon hydrotherapy.
When there is less matter in your colon, that is a big help. While there is a continuous flow of waste moving toward the far end of your body (as it should), if you are clogged and constipated being able to retain a coffee enema is likely to be 'challenging.'
If you are chronically very bloated and full in the abdominal area, you CAN still do this process. To retain a coffee enema, you just need to cleanse thoroughly with around 2 quarts of lukewarm water beforehand to make room for the coffee.
