Saponins in Our Foods

Saponins are toxins plants make to protect them from insects, fungus and bacteria.

They are essentially pesticides that damage our bodies.

In this article you will learn which are the highest saponin containing foods, the symptoms and side effects of eating them and - how our food supply is being contaminated with even MORE of these kinds of toxins.

Saponins Dangers are Insidious

When I think of the saponins dangers I unwittingly exposed myself to in the name of being healthy, I have to shake my head.

Until just a few years ago, I consumed an abundance of every plant 'food' in the lists below.

The side-effects are very insidious, at first not noticed. Perhaps like you - years ago, I would have attested that none of those foods bothered me. Intensive research has revealed otherwise.

Having consumed saponins along with a host of other known and unknown plant toxins found in so-called 'healthy' foods (all plant-based) I must admit to past abject ignorance.


Foods High in Saponins

Both conventional and 'holistic' sources are berating us to eat a diet primarily consisting of vegan foods high in dangerous plant pesticides.

All beans - especially soy - including lentils, all nuts and seeds, all whole grains, all alliums (onions, garlic, chives), spinach, kale, peppers - especially chilies, asparagus, beets, yams, tea, quinoa, flaxseeds, oats, cocoa - all chocolate, tomatoes, potatoes, yucca, licorice. As well saponins are found in abundance in 'wild greens' - dandelion, lambs quarters, purslane, etc.

Basil, cinnamon, clove, coriander, ginger, nutmeg, oregano, rosemary, sage, and thyme are all high in saponins.

Saponins Harm Your Gut

Saponin poisoning symptoms in humans include abdominal distension and bloating, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.

Such symptoms indicate that saponins are harming our digestive systems.

Saponin compounds cause gut inflammation - destroying tight junctions between columnar epithelial cells lining the gut. Leaky gut - allowing substances into the bloodstream that should NOT be there and do harm) is the end result of inflammation caused by plant saponins.

Foods like spinach, kale and onions so frequently consumed by humans are the target of such genetic manipulation.

A ScienceDirect research article concludes by suggesting that plant breeders should genetically engineer plant crops for human consumption to include MORE saponins and other plant pesticides.

'Microbial pathogens attack every plant tissue, including leaves, roots, shoots, and flowers during all growth stages. Thus, they cause several diseases resulting in a plant's failure or loss of the whole crop in severe cases. To combat the pathogens attack, plants produce some biologically active toxic compounds known as saponins. (3)
