Carbohydrate myth and fact: you may benefit greatly by following the recommendations of some top holistic Medical Doctors.

My personal experience, and that of many coaching clients bears out my conviction that doing the opposite of what 'conventional wisdom' dictates is often the very best course of action.

the Basics

Carbohydrates myth and fact: An important truth is, as we age, and with any stress that occurs, our bodies lean more and more toward sugar-burning as opposed to fat-burning for energy. 

This is a bad thing - it leads to chronic disease including heart and circulatory disease, overweight, and virtually any disease condition you can name. Degenerative diseases in particular, have excess carb consumption as one major contributing factor. 

All things being equal, children and young people are more able to use fat for energy. However, things are NOT equal - the decline in health in most children continues at an accelerated rate in each succeeding generation. More immunizations (up to around 50 by age 3 or 4) is just one major cause of stress in kids. 

Stress compromises metabolism and ability to utilize fats as fuel. I have seen chlidren with Aspergers and similar conditions - who insisted on only eating high-carb foods - despite parental encouragement toward healthier diet that includes more proteins and fats.

Dr. Loren Cordain, Dr. David Perlmutter, Dr. Joseph Mercola and Dr. Frank Shallenberger are among the top holistic medical doctors who promote a high-fat, moderate protein, low carb diet. Dr. Robert Atkins of course was one of the original proponents of this way of eating.

"Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. Dr. Frank Shallenberger and other holistic doctors tell us that the healthiest people have a fat-burning metabolism and the more we lean toward sugar burning for energy, the less healthy we become.

Dr. Shallenberger unequivocally states, 'There are essential amino acids (proteins) and essential fatty acids. There is no such thing as an 'essential carbohydrate'!'

The healthiest people on the planet were our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Their diet contained very little plant food. No one had created apples the size of softballs or ears of corn ten inches long. The most prized foods were the high-fat parts of the animals they hunted; organ meats, back fat, bone marrow. 

Once humans began to develop plants for food and move toward an agricultural way of life, they began to experience health problems such as tooth decay, cardiovascular disease, arthritis and other ills. Sugar in any form is very addictive, so the consumption of carbs continued to grow. Human health declined through the generations as this trend continued.

Examples of Faulty Thinking

Myth: 'Carbohydrates provide your body with the glucose it needs for normal functioning. They are needed for energy production.'

Fact: Through glucogenesis, your liver converts a small amount of protein into glucose. If all you ate was ribeye steak, as people on the 'carnivore diet' commonly do, a little of that would convert to carbs and provide all the carbs you need!

Myth: 'There are 'bad carbs' such as alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, candy and pastries, and 'good carbs such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains.'

Fact: There are NO good carbs; as Dr. Frank Shallenberger says, 'On the top of the list of things that will kill you are - CARBS!'

Dr. Shallenberger also says - 'There is NOTHING that supresses your resting fat metabolism (a measure of good health) MORE than eating carbohydrate. I consider ALL carbs of ANY kind the same thing as eating chocolate cake - ALL carbs lower your energy!'

Myth: You need to eat carbs because your brain needs them for 'fuel.'

Fact: Your brain functions BETTER on ketones than on glucose! Studies show that people in ketosis functioned better during short-term information processing, are able to switch more efficiently and rapidly betweeen different streams of information and are better at converting visual stimuli into information than those whose brains were on glucose.

Myth: The 'right' kind of carbs should be the major part of your diet, with only around 10% fat and 20% protein.

Fact: ALL carbohydrates promote inflammation, cause fatigue, elevate triglycerides, accelerate aging and increase fat storage. The less carbs you eat, the healthier you will be.
