Olive Oil Cancer Research

Olive oil cancer research has revealed the benefits of various compounds in this delightful condiment.

Olive Oil Cancer Research in Spain

In Vitro experiments using fractions of the polyphenols or phenolic compounds in olive oil demonstrated their potential to be of help in deactivating breast cancer cell lines.

Research by scientists at both the Catalonian Institute of Oncology and University of Granada in Spain confirmed that olive oil polyphenols may help fight breast cancer.

Another part of the study found that feeding large amounts of extra-virgin olive oil to rats with induced breast cancer resulted in a reduction in malignancy.

"Our findings reveal for the first time that all the major complex phenols present in extra-virgin olive oil drastically suppress overexpression of the cancer gene HER2 in human breast cancer cells," said Javier Menendez, who, along with Antonio Segura-Carretero led the research team.

In the above study, compounds were isolated from extra virgin olive oil and used in much stronger concentration than would be obtained through generous amounts of olive oil in the diet. Olive oil is NOT a 'cancer cure.' However, this research does give you another reason to use more olive oil!

Olive Oil Polyphenols Protect DNA

In another olive oil cancer research study published in the August 2008 “Journal of American Nutrition,” researchers observed that olive oil protects DNA.

DNA damage is a cause of cancer, aging and many chronic degenerative conditions. The scientists found phenolic compounds in olive oil prevent DNA damage. Initial formation of cancer is inhibited by olive oil phenolics through the protection from oxidative stress that initiates inflammation and destroys healthy tissues.

Researchers concluded that, “Overall, these results suggest that [phenolic compounds] may efficiently prevent the initiation step of carcinogenesis in vivo, because the concentrations effective against the oxidative DNA damage could be easily reached with normal intake of olive oil.” [1]

What they are saying is that including olive oil regularly in your diet protects oxidative damage of cells. This is good news...

Consuming delicious first cold-pressed, extra virgin olive oil is a very easy and pleasurable way to promote Peak Health!
