Importance of Vitamin C Quality: Very few products make the grade!
Lower quality = very acid taste, irritating to GI tract, does not dissolve completely, limited capacity to fully saturate body tissues.

Importance of Vitamin C quality hit home with me when I attempted to do a high-dose protocol with what I thought was a quality brand. At first I believed it was simply the nature of ascorbic acid to be irritating to the digestive system when taken in high doses. While that can be a minor issue, in the case of the brand I first tried, I dropped it because it was simply too uncomfortable to take in doses of more than a couple of grams.
The other thing I noticed about this brand was that no matter how much I mixed it, there was always residue in the bottom of glass.
The importance of Vitamin C quality cannot be overstated, ESPECIALLY if you want to work up to a dose that Linus Pauling and other experts would approve.
Do you know that 90% of this nutrient that is sold in America comes from China?
The Wall street Journal called China the 'OPEC of Vitamin C!' This is because China's four biggest producers got together and manipulated the price to undercut competitors in US and Europe. Though the US companies filed anti-trust suits, the last producer in the US was forced to close back in 2006.
Chinese-produced nutrients tend to have quality control issues. For example, the importance of Vitamin C quality control issues surfaced in America when traces of lead, arsenic and iron contamination were found in discount brands containing ascorbic acid made in China.
NOTE: There ARE a few reputable labs in China - in our search for excellence, we cannot issue a blanket statement that would exclude companies with integrity. I learned from industry insiders that in fact there ARE a very few labs in China that DO provide excellent nutritional compounds.
The outstanding companies I deal with have EVERY batch of raw material that comes in, no matter where it is from, assayed by an established testing facility.
It costs more to make a very fine grind that, assuming purity, will dissolve thoroughly when you mix it in water. The lesser quality product I used left a residue at the bottom of the glass. My new product does not. You can't absorb what doesn't dissolve.
The most important plus of a very fine-ground, top quality product is that it is able to produce MUCH higher levels of C in the body for enhanced therapeutic benefits. You can take 100% more of it before reaching 'bowel tolerance,' the point at which C dosage causes loose stool.
In considering the importance of Vitamin C quality, the FORM it comes in has a bearing on therapeutic effectiveness, taste, tolerability, how much C is available for absorption and how much is actually utilized.
This is NOT a commonly known factor people consider when evaluating Ascorbic Acid products. Like many other compounds, ascorbic acid can take two possible forms; L-form - levorotary - which is left-rotating and D-form - dextrorotary - which is right-rotating (clockwise, from observer's point of view).
The L-form of Ascorbic Acid molecular structure is comprised of chemical side-chains of atom clusters arranged in a counterclockwise formation to the left. The L-form is the ACTIVE beneficial form of Vitamin C.
Did you know that most Vitamin C contains some biologically INACTIVE D-form compound? D-form refers to a clockwise or dextrorotary arrangement of clusters of atoms branching out from a central carbon atom.
Importantly, the D form of ascorbic acid not only is INEFFECTIVE as a supplement, but also is notably more IRRITATING to the digestive tract than the L-form.
Do you know that the vast majority of ascorbic acid contains a goodly portion of D-form Ascorbic Acid? Why…? Because it is cheaper than L-form, so less cost to companies.
This may be the main reason I could not continue to megadose with what I had thought to be a reputable product.
Upon trying a pure L-Form of this nutrient, I was delighted to find that not only was I able to EASILY consume doses of 4 - 6 grams mixed in a glass of water - it also TASTED better!
After mixing in water for 10 - 15 seconds, ALL of this super fine ground product was completely dissolved!
It tastes like lemon juice (an improvement over the previous product) but without the character of actual fruit juice. It impresses me with a purity that is palpable both in taste and effect. The felt effects are like a very clean and subtle high.
With all this talk of the importance of Vitamin C Quality, what is this mystery product of which I speak?
