Autonomic Balancing Through Meditation
Autonomic balancing through meditation can contribute greatly to health and longevity.
Here, a Zen Buddhist monk discusses how meditation practice can contribute to health and longevity by balancing the involuntary nervous system and reducing stress.
**Just for fun, you might want to try and guess the age of this monk before he tells it at the end of his talk.
So - how close did you come to guessing his age?
Autonomic Balancing Hint...
One of the biggest obstacles to autonomic balancing is our tendency to think and intellectualize about everything!
When we are thinking, we are often more in the past or present than in the 'now.'
I can tell you from my personal experience that when you are truly in the 'now,' and in a state of equilibrium - you will find yourself in a VERY powerful state!
One thing you can do to be in the 'now' and move toward autonomic balancing is to slow down and simply notice body sensations. This is why many meditation practices start with noticing the movement and sensation of your breath.
When you notice bodily sensation, you may begin to notice tension in your muscles, and maybe also around the organs in the abdominal area. See if you can let go of the tension in your eyes and in your jaw. That is good - much better than being oblivious to your stress.
As you deepen your ability to feel bodily sensation, you have the opportunity to deepen your experience of life.
